Early Encounters with AI

It was sometime in the mid-90s that my Dad’s friend in the US Navy introduced me to a primitive form of artificial intelligence: an unwieldy box of wires and microchips that played a pretty mean game of chess.

To him, this was a marvel of human ingenuity, a testament to our relentless pursuit of knowledge and innovation. To me, it was just another curious gadget, fascinating but no more revolutionary than the microwave oven or the VCR.

Oh boy, how things have changed.

…and if I wasn’t in the right place and time I’d have missed this opportunity.

I was selected to be an alpha tester for OpenAI. We got early access ChatGPT in the Spring of 2022.

Our testing group provided narrow domain expertise - we were all coders who used different languages. Over the span of 9-months we witnessed incredible increases in reasoning capability and even primitive creativity.

In the fall of 2022 our evaluation group got our first glimpse of ChatGPT-4.

That’s when I began testing out a theory: could I build a Mastery Operating System using ChatGPT as the brain?

Enter DaVinci.

Building the Mastery Operating System

Named after the Renaissance genius, Leonardo da Vinci, DaVinci is a personal development companion - a blend of cutting-edge technology, cognitive science, and the art of self-improvement.

Upgrading DaVinci

Much like Michelangelo chipping away at a slab of marble, I use AI to actively improve AI.

I used a prompt to iteratively refine DaVinci’s source code.

This process refined DaVinci’s language model, increasing its efficiency and precision. We accomplished this by introducing a more concise prompt design, which has effectively freed up what we tech-geeks call 'contextual tokens'.

It's like DaVinci just received its own personal Renaissance.

Now, I know that sounds like technobabble, so let me translate:

Essentially, by making DaVinci's prompts more precise, we have created more room for meaningful, focused conversations between you and your AI companion.

It's like giving DaVinci a sharper, more effective tool to carve out a path towards your personal development goals.

Imagine you're climbing a mountain.

Your goal is to reach the peak, but there are many paths you can take, some more arduous than others.

Previously, DaVinci could guide you up this mountain, but occasionally, it might:
