Early Encounters with AI
It was sometime in the mid-90s that my Dad’s friend in the US Navy introduced me to a primitive form of artificial intelligence: an unwieldy box of wires and microchips that played a pretty mean game of chess.
To him, this was a marvel of human ingenuity, a testament to our relentless pursuit of knowledge and innovation. To me, it was just another curious gadget, fascinating but no more revolutionary than the microwave oven or the VCR.
Oh boy, how things have changed.

I was selected to be an alpha tester for OpenAI. We got early access ChatGPT in the Spring of 2022.
Our testing group provided narrow domain expertise - we were all coders who used different languages. Over the span of 9-months we witnessed incredible increases in reasoning capability and even primitive creativity.
In the fall of 2022 our evaluation group got our first glimpse of ChatGPT-4.
